MISC:Ecuador's name comes from the fact the Equator passes through the
country; it has a glacier that lies across the Equator (the only place
on earth where latitude and temperature may read zero); Quito, the
capital city also lies on the Equator. Chimborazo volcano is the
tallest lump on the earth's surface when measured from the center of
the earth; since it's near the equator it is actually higher than
Mt.Everest. Chimborazo is also the highest active volcano in the world.
Ecuador is subject to frequent earthquakes, landslides, volcanic
activity, and tsunamis. Member of UN since 1945. Member of OAS. Metric
system is legal standard but Spanish measurements are still in general
use.
